Boat trips
You can take boat trips on many of the lakes, including Windermere, Ullswater, Coniston and Derwentwater. Here are the main companies which provide boat tip servise:
- Ullswater ‘Steamers’ have been sailing on this most beautiful of England's lakes for almost one hundred and fifty years, and to this day, they remain the perfect way to enjoy the area. Stops at Glenridding, Howtown, and Pooley Bridge;
- Keswick Launch Company offers Lake District cruises around Derwentwater throughout the year. The journey starts from the Keswick and cruise around the lake stopping at seven lakeshore jetties. Also you have the opportunity to stay on the boat and enjoy the 50 minute trip around Derwentwater.
- Windermere Lake Cruises carries over 1 million passengers per year. Stops at Ambleside, Waterhead, Bowness and Lakeside.
Steam railway
For many people steam railway it's an occasion to enjoy family time together, soaking in the rich variety of flora and fauna plus that special beauty reserved for this part of the Lake District. Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway is the longest and the most exciting steam railway in the Lake District. It uses the oldest in the world working 15" (38.1cm) gauge locomotive, which runs for seven miles (11.3 kilometres) from the Lake District National Park's only coastal village of Ravenglass in the Western Lake District, through hidden Miterdale, to the grandeur of the Eskdale valley. The Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway is also the steam railway which brings you back in time through the ever changing scenery of the Leven Valley to Lakeside at the foot of Windermere.
